Waste of money, or wise investment?

I have been looking around at different types of baby monitors lately, as my little one is fast outgrowing his bassinette (It’s not very big!) and is going to have to move into his own room with his much larger crib

Since I have the extreme fear that my baby is going to stop breathing during the night (I think most of us have that fear!), I was looking into getting one of those Angel Care monitors, that detect the slightest of movements, and sounds an alarm if no movement is detected.

However, the price tag for them here is a little steep, as dear hubby likes to keep bringing up! So he’d prefer the cheaper alternative, of a baby monitor, that picks up most sounds, and has red sensor lights to ‘show’ the volume of any sound, if that makes sense.

I would just like to know, fr any people that do have the angel care monitor, did it ease your mind completly? Is it worth the money?
Or will the regular monitor do the same job?

Any opinion on the topic is welcome, but I plead for no nasty-pasty answers that would require a reporting

(I only mention that part, since I’ve copped a bit lately, from a ‘fan’ of mine turned nasty and stalker-ish!)
I wish they were $150 here! There a good $260 where I’ve been looking.

I wish the crib could fit in our room too! Sadly, it can’t :( Damn tiny house!!
We’ve also bought up the possibility of co-sleeping, I hear good things.
But I’m worried I’ll roll over and squash my poor boy!
I’m not 100% sure about the Apnea aspect..I guess it is in some sort of way at least?

Good thinking with the visit to Dick Smiths!

I would just get the regular monitor.
For me, personally, I’d still be worried about the fancy monitor not working right so I’d still check on him and all that :)

If it would ease your mind then it is worth it.

They aren’t for me because I co-sleep. With my first I didn’t even need a baby monitor because he was so loud. With my second I got one with lights because he barely cries and there is no way I can hear him over my toddler. It only helps so much though, I have to be looking at it or near it and it has to be aimed properly -then again maybe I should have gotten a more expensive one.

I dont have one but I would say I think it is a waste of money. Can you put the crib in your room or maybe a pack and play. You can give him a pacifier which would ease your mind a bit about SIDS. Or you could also co-sleep. I think those Angel monitors are like $150 and I dont think it is worth it.

ETA: $260! Holy crap. I would buy bigger bassinet in that case. lol

I have one that was bought for me while I was preg. It didn’t ease my mind at all. I kept wondering what if it wasn’t working i mean how do you really know that it works, I’m a nut and a first time mom so i worried a lot. I would still get up and check on my son even with it. So for me no it didn’t help and I’m glad I didn’t buy it. You just have to ask yourself will you trust the product? Will toy believe in it lol or will you still check anyways. How old is your baby? This risk of sids is highest between 2-6 months with the peak being between 4-6 months. Once my son was about 7 months old I chilled out a little. I still check on him if he sleeps longer than normal but i’m much more relaxed. I sold our angel care monitor on craigslist and bought a cheaper one and it works great. I know when my son is up and I can get him. Don’t worry it does get easier lol, I still worry a lot but not so much about sids, my son is 10 months old and now I worry about him choking on things and I’m spending wayy to much money childproofing lol there is always something to spend money on save money on things whenever you can:)

I’ve heard good and bad things about them. I’ve heard of them actually saving a child’s life, but I’ve also heard that it goes off on false alarms a lot. I’ve only had the regular monitor and I’ve just turned it up enough so I can hear him breathe at night.

Go down to Dick Smiths & get a video monitor.
We have one in the 3 elder boys rooms, and it set us back around 59$ each.
They aren’t actually *baby monitors* but they are very close to it. I can see the boys, and hear them.

I also have baby monitors that we bought second hand, and they are brilliant. Although one of the reasonably cheap brands, they work fine.

Just shop around and find what will work to settle both your minds.

Are you talking about an Apnea Monitor?
Don’t get one unless you need one, you will drive yourself CRAZY.
I have a son with Sleep Apnea, I am crazy enough.

    Thought some more.
When we got William his belts and mats, we had to buy from the Medical Supplies shop, which deals in Hobart. The price was HUGE, but we needed it.
We needed one that records every thing, because he actually does have apnea.
ANYWAY I was talking to my local chemist about it, and he said they actually hire mats out. If it would make you feel better, try hiring one. At least you will be a proper medical one, not an imitation. You pay a small fee per month. If he doesn’t have apnea, and your fear eases, you haven’t spent a huge price for something you won’t use again (or for awhile.)

We bought one and wouldn’t buy one again. We could take him out of the cot and it wouldn’t go off. It would go off with false alarms and wake him up as well. And it wasn’t faulty.

I have an angel care monitor and to be honest, I bought it because I was scared like you are.

Looking back, it was a silly purchase. We never really used the “pad” that goes under the bed and responds to lack of movement. It was complicated to use and then you have to worry about the wire, and where does it go so the baby doesn’t find it. We just never used it… Any basic baby monitor should be fine…

Also, I disagree with cosleeping. Now I’m not talking about short naps with your baby during the day… but I do think it is dangerous to cosleep all night, especially when you’re in a much deeper sleep.

I breastfed my son for almost 5 months, and I just got up nursed him, and went back to bed… and daddy helped by giving bottles of my milk. It was a rough couple of months, but then he learned to sleep in his own room and it was good. We didn’t have nearly as many battles with teaching him to sleep in his own crib because he was used to it all along.

Good luck, do what feels right for you. But I don’t think it is necessary to buy the angel monitor.

  • Brianna:

Somebody asked a question the other night about what the scarriest thing that happened with your baby so far. Someone answered that they had the specific monitor you are talking about and the alarm went off twice, both times while the baby was still breathing (or at least for sure I remember she said that the second time was). I am terrified of SIDS, but that monitor going off when it isn’t supposed to would terrify me even more. My fiance and I will continually go in and check on our son…and we have Graco monitors that work wonderfully…I can hear whenever he shifts his body. So when he moves in the slightest, I can hear it. My suggestion would maybe be to get video monitors? They can be rather expensive but in my opinion that would be better than the angel care monitor.

ETA: I checked out the Target website for the video monitors and I found one of the angelcare monitors (the original not deluxe) for $99 if you do decide on it and live in the US.

The link has all the video monitors too.

this is the babies r us link with all the video monitors. they have some pretty cheap ones that work well enough.

and if it were me i would rather see my son than have an alarm go off when he stops breathing. because on the video monitor you can see if he starts to get fussy and you also would be able to see his chest movements to know he is still breathing. Hope I was helpful- I didn’t mean to be pushy.

  • San Jose Mommy:

If your son has no health problems, then I would say don’t bother getting a monitor at all. I have had 2 kids and survived just fine without one. We never got one because I knew I would just worry anyways.

When I was researching them about a year and a half ago, I came across an article that I can’t seem to find at the moment. But it went into some great detail about a new mother’s sleep habits and how a monitor can actually hurt your sleep. You don’t consciously do it, but you will not fall into as deep of a sleep if you are listening to the monitor. That is why when the baby does move out of your room you will suddenly be getting a “real night’s sleep” again. You will wake up (even after having gotten up in the middle of the night to feed) really refreshed.

I have an angel care monitor not the same as you listed I have this one
http://www.angelcare-monitor.com/ac-201 and it was a a BIG help easing my mind. I was going to buy one new but I was lucky to find one at a consignment shop for $30.00. The only time I had the alarm go off was then I forgot to turn it off be for picking up my son

  • # 6 BEAN ON BOARD 37wks & 3days!:

I have one of the Angel Care ones. I even brought one for my sister when her baby was born – you can’t put a price on peace of mind.

Mine I got at Myer and it was $285, but I found a different brand one, that did exactly the same thing at Babyco for $185 for my sister.
