‘SMART’ DETECTORS AND CCTV CAMERAS ? A GUIDE TO UK NATIONAL CCTV STRATEGY
Closed circuit television (CCTV) plays a significant role in protecting, preventing and assisting in the investigation of crime. CCTV has been thought to be an effective tool, particularly as an aid to detection, and when used as part of a wider crime reduction strategy. However, the effectiveness of CCTV systems varies significantly in terms of coverage, monitoring, quality of images, uses and therefore the impact that CCTV can have on local crime and disorder.
The United Kingdom is considered to be the CCTV capital of the world and given the difficulties associated with the diverse state of CCTV coverage referred to above the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO)* [1] recognised the need to address the various problems. In April 2005, the ACPO CCTV/Video Working Group submitted a paper to the Home Office suggesting that there was a need to develop a strategy for the future development of public space CCTV The strategy would need to determine a programme of activity that should be undertaken in order to maximise the operational effectiveness of the country’s current CCTV infrastructure. *[2]
The British Standards Group (BSI) *[3] has also released a code of practice “British Standard BS8418” which covers the installation and remote monitoring of detector activated CCTV systems and sets out to raise the standard of installation and operation of integrated systems, this is a code of practice for the installation and remote monitoring of detector activated CCTV systems. The document provides recommendations on best practice for the design, installation, commissioning and operation of detector activated CCTV systems. This British standard is now mandated by UK Police jurisdictions and insurance companies.
Increasingly sophisticated intruder alarms are being integrated to incorporate ’smart’ detectors and CCTV cameras to provide a means of verifying, or confirming if an alarm is genuine. I recall the term “Videofied” from a French company which produces and sells wireless video verification alarm system integrated in one device. This technology ensures that the appropriate response can be actioned quickly and effectively by key holders, and more importantly by the Police. To minimise the number of false alarms that the Police attend, the Police will now only issue a Unique Reference Number (URN) to systems that comply with BS8418.
This not only affects the overall design of the system, but also the performance of motion detectors, CCTV cameras, alarm handling and how the system is maintained. Researchers from the University of Portsmouth one of the respected UK universities have designed artificial intelligence software to allow CCTV cameras fitted with microphones to recognize sounds such as crowd noise and windows smashing. The cameras would ‘hear’ noises associated with violence, and automatically swivel to record the event. This is a typical example of why the UK CCTV strategy for future will need also to address concerns of a ‘Big Brother’ society and the overuse of CCTV.

Fire Alarm Training For An Installation Professional
The importance of a properly installed fire alarm system is not to be overlooked. We, as consumers, understand the role of the fire alarm in our homes and subsequently we turn to alarm installation professionals to ensure that our fire alarms are properly installed and up to code. For those performing the installation, a special fire alarm training program is necessary in order to guarantee their expertise in this specialized industry.
Technicians who install fire alarm systems must participate in a fire alarm training program; in most cases a longer, introductory course is taken initially. Following this, a yearly course is offered in which technicians can brush up on their skills and learn about new fire codes that have been adopted. These brush-up courses are offered to those technicians who exclusively install fire alarms as well as those versed in a variety of alarm installations including security alarms.
Most often fire alarm training will include the fundamentals of fire alarm system plans wherein technicians examine the layout of the building and make a drawing that details the best location for fire alarms – as well as supplemental fire safety measures such as sprinkler systems. In addition, fire alarm training also requires technicians to efficiently install fire alarms with the attention given to wiring and fire codes.
A fire alarm technician is expected to install, connect, program, and test a fire alarm so that it passes fire inspection by authorities. Fire alarm training will ensure that the technician is up to the challenge by offering comprehensive classroom instruction with the use of accredited materials, followed by hands-on field instruction.
Fire alarm training is absolutely essential to having fire alarm technicians who can efficiently do their job. The end result will be homes, offices, and other buildings that include the utmost of fire safety measures.

Tips and Tricks in Burglar Alarm Installation
The increasing crime rate has made people more and more anxious about their safety. Now more than ever, they are looking for ways to go about their daily business safely. That’s why most of them employ the services of a burglar alarm system. Some of them even do the installation themselves so that they’ll be more secure since they are the ones doing it.
Here are some tips and hints in burglar alarm installation:
1. Find out if you’re going to need a wireless or hirewired installation. It’s a choice between a hardwired or a wireless alarm system. The factors that one must weigh in is the layout of the house, whether it’s new or already existing, the cost as well as the availability of the system. You might find out that wires may not look good with the interior design of your room, so you might opt to have a wireless system. Though more expensive, this makes your security system discreet to observers. If you are having a major renovation or having a new home, you might want to incorporate a hardwired system into your design. You might choose to run it embedded in your walling or flooring.
2. When using wired systems, it’s easy to hide the wires around door frames and walls if you cover it with molding.
3. Wires can also be simply run and hidden under floor boards. If this is not possible, try making a small gap between the carpet underlay and the inside edge of the carpet gripper rod and let your wire or cable run through this gap. If this is not possible either, you can always try trunking.
4. Also, in burglar alarm installation, it is important that you lay out your components correctly. You should have a floor plan of the building. Then you can determine the points of entry, different rooms, windows, as well as the most vulnerable areas in the building. You should also make a walk-through with your building to see the areas that might be most susceptible for intrusion. With that information, one could already determine what type of alarm system is to be used as well as the different zones to cover.
5. The placing of the panel and the keypad comes next. The sensors, bellbox, internal sounders are also then placed in strategic locations.
It is best that you follow these steps correctly when starting up your burglar alarm installation. This is to ensure that you have an efficient system, as well as no problems during installation. This will save you a lot of money, time as well as effort.
You can do your own burglar alarm installation! Use the right instructions on how to install your wireless burglar alarm.

Tips For Installing Your Car Security Alarm
Buying a car security alarm is not enough to enjoy peace of mind. Before you can breathe a little easier when your vehicle is parked without you, it is imperative that you get that system installed and running right. When saving a few dollars is the plan, it is feasible to install some systems without the help of a professional.
How easy or complicated the installation job will be will depend on the type of system you have purchased. Perhaps one of the most simplistic systems to install is a siren-based alarm. This will only require basic tools and an understanding of how to use them.
Before you get started installing any type of system, do make sure to read the instructions from the manufacturer thoroughly. Also, collect the tools of the trade you’ll need, including such things as a knife, drill, screwdriver, mounting tape, a voltage meter, solder, a soldering gun and scissors.
The exact steps involved in installation might vary depending on the device attached, but will likely require you to:
Pick your mounting spots – You will need to select a place to put the control module, or brain of the alarm, and also the siren. Once you have done this, follow manufacturer instructions for hooking up these parts and wiring them correctly. The LED indicator, valet switch and sire will all need to be properly wired to the brain for the system to function correctly.
Position and place sensors – These will have to be positioned in the correct mounting location and then hooked into the brain, as well. It is a very good idea to place sensors temporarily and test them for how much coverage they provide before settling on a permanent location.
Door trigger placement – If the alarm you have purchased includes door triggers or a keychain alarm activation/deactivation device, you will need to place the door triggers and tie them into the system at this time. Generally, these tie into the parking light and dome light circuits. Before settling in and considering this step completed, it is a very good idea to test it.
Unhook the battery – Before you do the final wire splicing and make the installation job look neat and clean, be sure to disconnect the battery. While it is necessary to have it in place to test functionality, it is imperative for the connection to be broken when the actual final splicing work is done.
Finishing touches – Once everything is in place, properly mounted and wired, finish up by testing the system one last time and permanently mounting the control module.
Putting in a car alarm is not for everyone. If there are any concerns about having the ability to get it right, it is not a bad idea to hire a pro to do the job. Most stores that specialize in car alarms will offer installation on site or have recommendations they can make. Many garages, too, offer installation services. Keep in mind that some systems are simply more complicated than others and might require a skilled hand to tackle the installation.
